HEDD | Heinz ElectroDynamic Designs was founded in 2015 in Berlin by renowned physicist and loudspeaker designer Klaus Heinz and his son, musicologist Dr. Frederik Knop. HEDD designs and manufactures active studio monitors and the HEDDphone®, an innovative open-back reference headphone designed to meet the critical demands of professionals and audiophile listeners.
HEDD products are known worldwide for their unique Air Motion Transformer (AMT) technology, which we use in the high-frequency drivers of our loudspeakers and as the full-range solution for the HEDDphone®. Unlike planar, dynamic or electrostatic drivers, it is based on a pleated Kapton membrane that is folded into a magnetic field. Air is sucked in and squeezed out at each fold, accelerating the air significantly. The sonic benefits are faster transient response and greater high frequency extension, increasing precision, clarity and, ultimately, realism in audio reproduction.
To achieve a consistent frequency response across the entire audible frequency range, we had to refine the original Air Motion Transformer design by adding new geometries and a more complex system of variable-sized folds. We call this approach the Variable Velocity Transform - VVT.

Handcrafted in Berlin with the highest quality components, the HEDD Air Motion Transformer utilizes HEDD's expertise to deliver impeccable transient response and ultra-high frequency extension. As a result, high frequencies remain transparent and linear and do not distort the natural sound reproduction in any way.
