macOS Catalina

Pro Tools 2019.12 adds initial support for macOS Catalina. This means that while most Pro Tools functions are supported, compatibility with certain file types is not yet available and will come in a future release. For more information on these limitations, read thru this page. You can then decide whether your system and workflow are fully compatible before updating or purchasing a new Mac.

PRO TOOLS FILE TYPE LIMITATIONS ON MACOS CATALINA

Apple has completed their transition to 64-bit technology with macOS Catalina. Pro Tools is a 64-bit application, but it has been relying on a few external 32-bit components for import, export, and playback of certain file types, such as QuickTime MOV files. We are looking to replace this functionality as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will be providing as much support as we can on Catalina, and we will be releasing functionality as it becomes available. The goal of this article is to outline what does and doesn’t work in each version of Pro Tools, so that you can make sure the functionality you need is available before deciding to update your OS or purchase a new machine.

While we will not be replacing every file type and codec that was previously supported, we will be supporting those which are most common. Until all intended functionality is replaced, the previous implementation will be available when Pro Tools is used on earlier supported versions of macOS.
