The best of both worlds! The UA1176 SEPIA module combines the classic sound of the 1176 with modern controls.
Karno is pleased to announce that Universal Audio has joined the SEPIA platform as a partner, bringing the legendary UA1176 compressor to SEPIA. This collaboration brings one of the most respected compressors in recording history to Karno's digitally controlled analog ecosystem, combining authentic circuitry with modern workflow integration. Founded in 1958 by recording pioneer Bill Putnam Sr., Universal Audio has since become synonymous with high-quality analog design and innovation.

The 1176 was first introduced in 1967 as the world's first FET compressor. Thanks to its fast response time, musical characteristics, and ability to add control and personality, it quickly became a studio staple. From vocals and drums to guitars and bass, the 1176 has shaped the sound of countless records across all genres. The UA1176 SEPIA module preserves the original analog circuitry, including the JFET design and transformers. It operates in a digitally controlled environment with modular signal routing, instant recall, and software-based control via DAW, tablet, console, or phone. The module also includes practical enhancements, such as a built-in full-module bypass and an integrated 1176SA stereo-link function. These features expand flexibility while preserving the authentic sound that has distinguished the device for decades.
SEPIA is a modular hardware platform that combines analog sound with precise digital control within a compact and flexible system. The L6 host is designed for professional users who want reliable performance and seamless integration. It supports interchangeable modules from leading manufacturers. Each module preserves the authentic sound of classic analog hardware while offering advanced control features for modern production environments. "There was strong demand from the industry to integrate the 1176 into SEPIA," said Adam Pierce, director at Karno. "We are delighted to now be able to do so." Bill Putnam Jr., the CEO of Universal Audio, added, "Universal Audio has always focused on developing hardware that inspires creativity. The integration of the 1176 into SEPIA opens up new possibilities for its use, from flexible studio setups to stage applications."
This partnership is an important step in SEPIA's growth, combining Universal Audio's heritage with Karno's vision of modern analog-digital integration. The UA1176-SEPIA module will soon be available for SEPIA-L6 hosts, offering this sought-after compressor in an entirely new format.
